Raising Them for the Lord

We had a wonderful day at church yesterday. We had a Baby and Child dedication service. (Or as LadyBug puts it "we got marry-cated") For anyone not familiar with this it does not have anything to do with the children's salvation. Rather it is a covenant between the parents, church and God. The parents agree that the child will be raised in a Godly home and they will do everything they can to ensure good influences that will guide them towards a relationship with Christ. The church members agree to be supportive prayer partners that will help the parents in providing Godly role models. I have not listed all the promises made but that is the main point of it all. We had many young families take part in this, including us. It was particularly touching to me that with The FisherMan leading the service I would have been standing alone. The GuitarMan chose to stand in for his dad. Our little ones are so blessed to have not only such a wonderful, loving daddy but also this caring, protective brother of theirs.

It is overwhelming when you think of what goes into being a Godly parent. Like the FisherMan said in his sermon, it takes more than just loving that child and providing for them. Anyone, Christian or not, can do that. But when you realize that everything you do should be steering that precious child's life towards the Lord it puts everything in a new light. Self-examination should be a constant in our lives anyway but when you realize there is a little life watching you so closely....well, it takes more than saying "Don't be like me. I want better for you." It takes being better.

It has been said that God equips those He calls. When you become a parent it is much bigger than a biological event. It is God calling you to a life-changing, life-long relationship. I want to know I am making the most of that relationship. Childhood is so fleeting. Yet it is a steady, gradual building of an adult person. Mothers, Fathers, you are called to build that person to be their best. And as much as we want the best of everything for our children it's not all about the monetary best. Riches mean nothing when you are spiritually empty. I have personally seen people sit in their beautiful mansions and weep uncontrollably because they felt so alone. So as parents we must rely on God to do the equipping so we can fulfill the calling to parenthood. We need to be ever mindful of the legacy we are leaving behind. Years from now I may not be remembered but will the values and beliefs I helped instill in my children still be alive? Sobering thoughts. Overwhelming thoughts.

  1. It sounds like a wonderful service. I really enjoyed the comment about the money and riches. I traded an aspiring career to raise my little ones and I am grateful but there are times when we need to be reminded that raising our kids means more than providing financially for them. Blessings

  2. Hi Lorrie: Welcome! You are so right about being reminded. There's plenty out there to discourage us in our journey as parents but praise God He IS our encouragement!

The Season of Pregnancy (updated)

I know. I have been neglecting this blog. Horribly. That's not the only thing that has been thrown by the wayside lately! It is only for a season though. Pregnancy means you must be patient with yourself and accept that sometimes you must let things slide. That also means that you have to plan in order to conserve your energy. I know if I am going somewhere later today then I don't need to rush around and try to get a lot done in the morning. Priorities must be in order. Although the morning sickness is better it isn't totally gone at this point. Whoever named it that anyway? The main thing I have been dealing with is fatigue. My blog shows it. My laundry shows it. My house shows it. Ack, everywhere shows it! I simply do not have the energy to do the bending up and down required to truly clean up, do laundry, and the vacuuming/sweeping etc. It's quite depressing actually! So I do a little here, do a little there. I manage the necessities such as homeschooling, cooking, ...

Why the Hurry?

We are indulging in an early lunch today after having a late breakfast. I would say it is due to growth spurts but I'm not sure. Unfortunately mine tend to be outward rather than upward so I am hoping that isn't the case for Mama! :P As I went towards the kitchen to fix lunch LadyBug frantically called, "Wait, wait! Mama look at my picture!" She had worked so hard to color a kitty in a coloring book. The head was royal blue and the body orange while it sported a jaunty red bow. (Just so you Auburn fans know it...there was some Crimson Tide thrown in there, ha!) I praised her for staying in the lines while in my head I thought of how an adult would have had to made it look more real. Have you noticed that about children? The majority of young children never color a picture to look real. They use different colors all over. FlowerChild used to color pictures of people and animals with a pattern of up to 8 colors at a time! Have you ever seen a plaid horse? How about a st...

Happenings Around Here

Well, another dog lost. :( This time it wasn't a car but something more sinister...a rattlesnake. She was bitten yesterday evening and lasted about 4 1/2 hours. Poor little Chi-Chi is only about 6 pounds or so and just couldn't take the venom. LadyBug seems to be taking it the hardest among the children. Our Bassett Hound, Daisy, and Chi-Chi are the best of friends and poor Daisy has spent the day looking for her. So sad. The GuitarMan has finished his semester and is home now. I introduced him to Pilates this morning. We worked out together. Ha ha, now if that wasn't a sight I just don't know what would be! He has a new found admiration for it now though. Afterwards I cut the FisherMan's hair outside under the plum tree while the children played in the pool. He asked if there was a way we could be any more redneck. I had plenty of ideas on that if he wanted but he didn't want to take part lol. Apparently it was a rhetorical question. This week was one of apprec...
