The Breakfast Table

I mentioned yesterday that I was trying to prepare a family breakfast each day. I have wanted to start doing this for a while for several reasons. It is such a nice way to start the day together. It also helps us to establish more of a concrete routine. It is an easy way to flow into family devotions and homeschool time. The children are more cooperative and settled when their tummies are full. A light breakfast means constant requests for snacks and a bad case of the grumps.

Well, my children were not really on board with it yesterday. They did not eat very well and they kept looking at each other with this hesitant expression (what's up with Mama? why are we all at the table?) LOL I am great about lunch and supper but a family breakfast just isn't something we normally do on a regular basis. I have my cappuccino, the children have their breakfast and The FisherMan takes a snack or egg sandwich or something with him to work.

Well, not to be deterred I tried again today. It went much better, I must say. I just fixed some blueberry cheesecake muffins and fruit. But I looked around and The FlowerChild was setting the table by herself. Then little LadyBug got in on it. They got everything fixed up complete with flowers, napkins and silverware. My batteries were dead in my camera so I missed out on a cute picture of them in front of the stove peering through the oven window at the muffins. The conversation at the table was also more promising. FlowerChild announced that she liked everyone being together to eat in the morning. It was even better than watching TV while they ate. Now that is something coming from a child!

If you are looking for a way to spruce up your mealtimes get the children involved. They are usually so creative and can come up with lots of ways to make the table look special. If they do not enjoy eating at the table this is also a good way to encourage them in that area.

  1. How heartwarming! That was one of those special Mommy moments! I too try to always have breakfast at the table, but it doesn't always happen. It seems easier to pop them in front of the tv. I can run around with coffee in hand getting things going in the house. A couple of things interfere with my morning (1) I'm not a morning person and like to be left alone until I wake up (2) I stay up too late (3) The house wasn't pickup up before bedtime & I think I have to do it right away. So if I pickup the house before going to bed at a decent hour and put my selfish morning moodiness behind me....hmmm.

  2. Hi, Marie! Isn't it ironic that we try to train our children and be a blessing to our family and yet WE are the ones that learn to change and are blessed?! God is AWESOME and always at work in our lives! Be blessed! :)

The Season of Pregnancy (updated)

I know. I have been neglecting this blog. Horribly. That's not the only thing that has been thrown by the wayside lately! It is only for a season though. Pregnancy means you must be patient with yourself and accept that sometimes you must let things slide. That also means that you have to plan in order to conserve your energy. I know if I am going somewhere later today then I don't need to rush around and try to get a lot done in the morning. Priorities must be in order. Although the morning sickness is better it isn't totally gone at this point. Whoever named it that anyway? The main thing I have been dealing with is fatigue. My blog shows it. My laundry shows it. My house shows it. Ack, everywhere shows it! I simply do not have the energy to do the bending up and down required to truly clean up, do laundry, and the vacuuming/sweeping etc. It's quite depressing actually! So I do a little here, do a little there. I manage the necessities such as homeschooling, cooking, ...

Why the Hurry?

We are indulging in an early lunch today after having a late breakfast. I would say it is due to growth spurts but I'm not sure. Unfortunately mine tend to be outward rather than upward so I am hoping that isn't the case for Mama! :P As I went towards the kitchen to fix lunch LadyBug frantically called, "Wait, wait! Mama look at my picture!" She had worked so hard to color a kitty in a coloring book. The head was royal blue and the body orange while it sported a jaunty red bow. (Just so you Auburn fans know it...there was some Crimson Tide thrown in there, ha!) I praised her for staying in the lines while in my head I thought of how an adult would have had to made it look more real. Have you noticed that about children? The majority of young children never color a picture to look real. They use different colors all over. FlowerChild used to color pictures of people and animals with a pattern of up to 8 colors at a time! Have you ever seen a plaid horse? How about a st...

Happenings Around Here

Well, another dog lost. :( This time it wasn't a car but something more sinister...a rattlesnake. She was bitten yesterday evening and lasted about 4 1/2 hours. Poor little Chi-Chi is only about 6 pounds or so and just couldn't take the venom. LadyBug seems to be taking it the hardest among the children. Our Bassett Hound, Daisy, and Chi-Chi are the best of friends and poor Daisy has spent the day looking for her. So sad. The GuitarMan has finished his semester and is home now. I introduced him to Pilates this morning. We worked out together. Ha ha, now if that wasn't a sight I just don't know what would be! He has a new found admiration for it now though. Afterwards I cut the FisherMan's hair outside under the plum tree while the children played in the pool. He asked if there was a way we could be any more redneck. I had plenty of ideas on that if he wanted but he didn't want to take part lol. Apparently it was a rhetorical question. This week was one of apprec...
