I think I had mentioned the other day that I took Cornbread to the doctor for fever. That was the only definite symptom he had other than little abnormal tummy issues. He has run fever for 4 days and has just felt so bad. Irritable, no appetite at all. He was just pitiful.
At first (Thursday) the fever was low grade so since he was cutting a tooth I attributed it to that. But then it went to 102 Friday morning so I went ahead and scheduled an appt. The doctor we saw was not our usual doctor but she checked him for flu (negative). So she said it was a stomach virus. I wasn't so sure about that.
Well, I think I have diagnosed him now. I am pretty sure it is Roseola. His fever broke today and then he broke out in a mild rash. Hopefully it will stay mild! As soon as the rash started to spread he started to feel better. He ate supper and has been running around playing and talking. He is even asking for Daddy now, too. He will be home from church soon and will be glad to see his little man doing better.
From what I have seen with roseola and everything I have read this sounds like this is it. Typically the child begins to feel better once they break the fever and the rash appears.
The only thing is he is scheduled to have his 15 month checkup Tuesday and I am not so sure about having immunizations since he has just had this. Normally they say as long as there is no fever they can have their shots. But I am a bit concerned that he may have a rough time of it since he is so weak. I am thinking about waiting on the shots. What do y'all think? Comments, please! :)
It does sound like roseola. that is a virus, so chances are there's nothing they can do for him. I would wait a couple weeks on the shots. Just for the sake of how it will make him feel. If he's already feeling lousy, that's just going to make him worse. There, you have my two cents ;)
ReplyDeleteMichelle,
ReplyDeleteWell, that is what I think, too. Now that the fever has broken he is much better. However he still is not himself at all. Part of that may be from not eating/drinking/sleeping well over the last few days.
I can't imagine his doctor doing the immunizations with him all broken out but even if he suggests going ahead with it we are just going to wait. I am going to keep the appt. and verify it is roseola so it will be in his file though.
Ha, ha between you and me we are up to four cents now! ;)
I agree....wait in the immunizations. Why take any chances with a precious life?
ReplyDeleteThat's basically what Chicken Little had after a 4 day fever. Dr. "A" said of course, viral rash, and just gave us a low dose cortizone (sp?) cream to help relieve it. Hope little Cornbread feels better soon!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have to strongly suggest to hold off on the shots. Never immunize when the body is compromised . I follow a very different vax schedule if you care to read about it:-)

I agree with Michelle. Seems to me that it would be better to wait at least a week, while he recovers. Hope he feels better soon!
ReplyDeleteThank you everyone for your comments! :) I was correct...it was a classic case of roseola so much so that the doctor even called in a medical student to take a look at the rash. He gave her the history and then showed her the rash, hoping she could diagnose it. She wasn't able to but at least now she has seen it in something other than a medical book.
ReplyDeleteThere is no need for any treatment since the rash itself causes no discomfort. In fact, the main problem that can arise comes from the high fever. However, this has made Cornbread just miserable and he still does not feel himself. Still no appetite, will barely take a cup, no energy, irritable, restless sleep, you name it. Doc said it could take up to another week before he returns to normal. He has lost a pound this week!
We had already decided no shots before we went in but Doc was in agreement. He didn't even ask, just went ahead and said let's wait on the shots and just give it to him at his 18 month checkup.
Thanks again everyone...hopefully he will start feeling better soon and I feel much more at peace with waiting, rather than pushing anything. I'm thankful my doctor agrees!
Suzanne,
ReplyDeleteI would be very interested in reading about that. Thank you for sharing the link! :)
