I'm a blog junkie. I'll admit it. So many thoughts and viewpoints! Personally, I like to read blogs regularly so that I know where that person is really coming from. Even if it's not a post that truly interests me it gives me a better picture of how this person thinks and lives their life. If you are someone who tends to hop in and out of blogs rather than being a regular reader then you sometimes miss the big picture. You miss out on getting to know that person and how they express themselves. So if you pop in and read something today without knowing what has been written for the last 2 weeks there is a good chance you might misinterpret. I think it would be way too easy to read just one post and apply your own interpretation to it, thereby totally missing the point.
So here is just a friendly suggestion. If you are interested in a blog enough to comment or visit more than once then do the following.
*Take the time to read through someones archives. Get a feel for their writing style.
*Learn to recognize their brand of humor so you don't overreact to something that is said in jest. Some people have a sarcastic wit that means no harm, others have an understated dry wit, others can make emptying the trash simply hilarious.
*Don't make assumptions. If you are unsure about something that was written leave a comment and ask. But do it in a nice way, leaving the sarcasm off. Sarcasm just tends to make people feel defensive. It doesn't make you look more intelligent.
*Don't come in with guns blazing. If you must disagree, think it through and say it in love. Avoid "putting them in their place" and attempting to make them look foolish. You usually wind up making yourself look foolish in the process.
*If you realize you overreacted or misunderstood, have the grace and maturity to admit it.
I know some bloggers who will only allow comments that agree with their viewpoint. I'm not one of them. I can honestly say the only comment I have ever not published was one that included the person's email address. I don't mind if you disagree with me as long as you approach me with respect and are not abusive or crude. But before you assume anything about what I am saying be sure you really understand where I am coming from. Get to know me a little bit first. I will treat you with the same respect.

Oh, I think those are really words of wisdom!
ReplyDeleteMary,
ReplyDeleteI think it would really help avoid a lot of undesirable situations if we all tried to do these things. It's no fun being on the receiving end of some of those comments, right?! Blessings!
Very good ideas.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,

Deanna,
ReplyDeleteThanks and God bless!
I don't do a lot of blog hopping, but I do read tons and tons of blogs. And while I want to get to know the people behind the blogs I read, it can be hard to keep every straight and really get to know someone.
ReplyDeleteIf I have misunderstood or responded poorly, please forgive me. That is not my intent. But I have really enjoyed getting to know better through our most recent conversation. And, I think that's one of the aspect of blogging that is so interesting: Sometimes the best way to get to know who someone is is to interact about something that is interesting and important to them.
Very good words of wisdom here. And I agree: Following these steps would help alleviate many of the problems people have with each other on their blogs.

Hi, Luke
ReplyDeleteI agree...there are so many good blogs out there. It really can get confusing trying to remember who is who. So sometimes it is good to make a concentrated effort to take a few blogs at a time and see who they really are through their writing. Once you reach the point of friendship it does away with much confusion.
I have enjoyed our "talks' too. In fact, I have a response almost ready to publish (written amidst VBS prep, laundry, naps and Tigger...it really made sense when I wrote it though, so we'll see LOL!)I think it is awesome that we can challenge and encourage each other in our beliefs and walk with Christ.
Keep serving Him!
Oh, BTW did you ever catch your milk thief? :o)
Have not caught the milk thief yet. I haven't had a chance--er... honestly, haven't taken the time--to write up the next stage in that saga, but I need to [smile].
