The rain we've had has left the air so clean and sweet. We all suffer with allergies so we are ready for that. Not to mention, this is the first rainfall the garden has received. I am thankful for the sprinklers but there is just nothing like a good rain to get the plants to thrive.
Unfortunately the rain can also have some undesirable aspects. It gets the critters to moving! Yesterday we had a snake out at the manhut! Otherwise known as the gazebo. What kind, you say? A dead one. Well, he didn't start out that way. See, the GuitarMan came home for a visit yesterday. He wanted to spend some time with us, oh, and get his clean laundry. :P So we thought we would just grill some hamburgers for supper.
The FisherMan was out at the gazebo cooking and had the hamburgers finished. He was about to start the french fries. Cornbread and I had just walked back inside from being out there, too. FlowerChild was sitting out there strumming her guitar. Apparently her daddy turned around just in time to see this snake weaving his way out from under her chair attempting to go up the curtain of the gazebo. His heart dropped! At least first time obedience worked because she came to him as soon as he told her to. Poor baby, her dad told her to go get Brother and here she came, blond hair flying, screaming for him at the top of her lungs! It really scared her when she saw it!
We're pretty sure it was a rat snake but in case you hadn't noticed, strays have a tendency to stop here as they are passing through and then they never leave! And some have babies! So, harmless, my foot, that snake had to go! If he would have agreed to go quietly back into the woods we probably would have "escorted" him on out. But instead he slithered under the grill and hunkered down. Before we had a chance to identify him! So now the end of the story is that his body is on one side of the woods and his head is on the other. Just in case he was some kind of mutant snake that could do one of those transformer things and never die! Let's face it, if he came back he probably would not be too happy!

What joys of living in the country!!! I'm actually surprised that we haven't had more on the farm, especially with those chickens!
ReplyDeleteAnd I must say; rat snake, chicken snake, rattler, king cobra, or anaconda; if it's a snake and in my yard, that's trespassing...Papa rooster will shoot! lol
Life is grand! I told you that you never could tell about the south. Glad everyone is safe!
ReplyDeleteMama Hen and Country Life Girl:
ReplyDeleteWe've even had snakes in the city too. We have these big dogs running the yard. Everybody was in and out making all kinds of racket. There go all those myths of how to avoid a snake! :)
Ohh that snake story reminds me of summers in Louisiana and Miss. with my grandparents. We don't have snakes out here in the 'burbs!...but if I see one...I'd let my 13 year old take it out with a shovel...if it's on my homestead...all critters end up dead.
ReplyDeleteLorrie: You sound like me...whenever there is a critter I yell for my hubby or my son. But if it's a lizard son is on his own since he's the only one who will touch it! I'm just glad he was home when this happened so he could help kill it!
