I had a conversation with a preschooler recently that really got me to thinking. She asked my daughter what she wants to be when she grows up. LadyBug said a cowgirl. Don't ask me why she is in that phase right now...we do not own a horse...I think she enjoys wearing the boots. So LadyBug asked me what I wanted to be. I said I think I want the best job in the world, to be a mommy! She lit up and smiled. The other child thought for a minute and said to me, "You really don't know what you want to be, do you?"
Now pause and think on that for a moment. Do you realize what we are teaching our children? Being a wife and mother is nothing. You have to BE something to be SOMEBODY. No career equals NOBODY. We wonder what has happened to today's children. We wonder what has happened to the family. We wonder what has happened to the soul of America.

You hit the nail on the head! My daughter saw some other women in the family talking about work and she wanted to go (I think she equates it with shopping). I told her we were going to stay home and work there, that is what Mama's and Wives do..but the pull starts young doesn't it.
ReplyDeleteI have heard several times "Oh, she just stays at home" I want to say "Oh, you just orphan your children for the day"
ARGH!
Many Blessings :)

Ace: Yeah, how many times do you hear "Oh she's just a teacher." "Oh, she's just a manager." Oh, she's just a counselor." "She's just a nurse." Yet, as mothers we do this everyday. And don't even get me started on the role of a wife!
